Focus on categories in Joomla

Categories help organize content in a logical way and bring structure to a website. This makes information easier to find, both for visitors and administrators. Many Joomla components use categories, so understanding this system is very important.

Recently, I gave a presentation at the Joomla User Group Arnhem Nijmegen about categories in Joomla. During the presentation, I first explained the basics of com_categories and the most important settings in the category manager. After that, we looked deeper into the technical side. We explored how categories are stored in the database and how third-party components use the Joomla Category Manager. I also explained the lft and rgt fields, which are part of the nested set structure Joomla uses to organize categories.

Finally, I showed why the “Rebuild” function is important to keep the category tree correct. With this knowledge, you better understand how categories work in Joomla and how to solve problems more easily.
