Joomla update service
It is important to keep software up to date: any problems or safety issues are resolved through updates. Joomla needs also be kept up-to-date.
Because not everyone has the time or inclination to keep his or her Joomla website up to date, db8 offers Joomla update and backup service for its customers.
Update a Joomla website
An update is a new minor version within the same series, so for example, Joomla 3.4.4 to 3.4.5. Such updates are bug fixes and no new features. It is highly advisable to first make a backup of the site (the files and database) before installing the update, and to keep the backup offsite (download to your local computer). Instruction:
- Create a backup with Akeeba Backup (if installed)
via Components> Akeeba Backup> "Backup Now".
Afterwards via "Manage" to download the backup to a local computer. - Update via Joomla Components> Joomla update.
If Joomla indicates that no updates are available, clear Joomla's cache:
Extensions> Manage> Updates> [empty cache]
Or download the update package via www.joomla.org and install it as an extension through
Extensions> Manage> Install - Make sure that the site is still functioning okay
Run a Joomla Upgrade
An upgrade is a new major release within the same series, so for example, Joomla 3.4.5 to 3.5.0. Such updates include new features and compatibility of the used extensions (3rd party extensions) should be tested.
Update from earlier versions of Joomla
The code and database structure of Joomla 1.0 and 1.5 differ so much from later versions that an update or upgrade is not possible. Two possible solutions are:
- The website build from scratch with content from the old version (cut & paste).
- If you have a huge website with much content, then you could perform a migration process: content (articles, categories, and menu items) will be transferred at the database level to a new Joomla version.
Look under Website migration for more information.
