Joomla 6.1.0 released
On Tuesday, April 14, 2026, the Joomla! Project released Joomla 6.1.0 together with Joomla 5.4.5. This new version brings fresh features, better performance, and stronger security made by volunteers for everyone: from personal bloggers to big companies.
What’s new in Joomla 6.1.0?
- Proof-of-Work CAPTCHA
Protecting forms is now seamless. Joomla 6.1 adds an invisible CAPTCHA that runs a small puzzle in the browser, blocking bots without user interaction or third-party services. - Visual workflow editor
Managing content workflows is now clearer. A graphical interface shows stages and transitions, making publishing processes easier to understand and edit. - Media custom field types
Handling media is more structured. New field types for audio, video, and documents improve data consistency and give better control in templates. - Module versioning and Multilingual Associations
Editing modules is safer. Joomla 6.1 introduces version history for modules, allowing you to track changes and restore previous versions when needed. And associate module instances across different languages.
A full list of changes can be found in the 6.1.0 milestone on GitHub.
Upgrading made simple
If you’re already using Joomla 5.4, upgrading to Joomla 6.1 is an upgrade, not a migration, usually quick, safe, and straightforward. Most extensions will continue to work thanks to the compatibility plugin.
However, it’s still important to plan and test the process carefully. We recommend testing the upgrade on a local or staging server first, before applying it to your live website. This ensures everything runs smoothly and avoids unwanted downtime.
