How improvements are added to Joomla

In April 2025, Peter Martin gave a presentation at the Joomla User Group Arnhem-Nijmegen titled "How improvements come into Joomla". He explained how bugs are reported, how the community contributes code, how patches are tested, and how they ultimately end up in a new release.

To demonstrate this process in action, he gave a live demonstration. He showed a usability issue in the Joomla core plugin "HTTP Headers". Within the Content Security Policy (CSP), options were not sorted alphabetically, making it difficult to quickly find the right one. Peter wrote a patch live to sort the options alphabetically. He also added a "fancy select", a dropdown with search filtering, to make selecting an option even easier.

He submitted this improvement as a Pull Request (PR) in the Joomla project:

  • HTTP Headers - CSP - Policy Directive: order + fancy select #45407

Once submitted, the code was automatically tested and approved. Two attendees then tested the PR on their own Joomla installations and manually approved it. The PR was marked as RTC (Ready To Commit).

The final step was up to the Joomla Release Managers. They reviewed and approved the PR, and the patch was added to the Joomla core. It is now included in this Joomla 5.3.1 release.
