How improvements come into Joomla
On Monday April 28, 2025, there is a meeting of the Joomla User Group Arnhem Nijmegen about how improvements come into Joomla – and how you can help with that.
Do you want to know how Joomla is developed? And how you can join the process, even if you are not a programmer? Peter Martin, one of the Release Managers of Joomla 5.2, will show step by step how the Joomla development process works.
Joomla is open source software
Open source means the code is free to view and use. Everyone can help improve it. There is no commercial company behind Joomla. Everything is done by the community. You don’t have to be a developer. Testing, reporting bugs or writing documentation is just as important.
Schedule
The Joomla development process
Peter explains how bugs are reported, how code is written, how patches are tested, and how a new Joomla release is made.
Live practical example
Together we will work on a real bug in Joomla. We will:
- check if it is really a bug
- report the bug in the Joomla system
- write a fix (patch) for the bug
- test the patch and give feedback to the project
Git & GitHub in practice
Joomla uses Git and GitHub for version control. But how do Git and GitHub work? And are they useful outside of software development? (Spoiler: yes, Peter even uses it to manage cooking recipes). In this part, Peter will show it in a simple and fun way:
- No boring theory, but a light and easy exercise
- No code – just a simple shopping list to show how version control works
This evening is perfect if you want to learn more about how Joomla is built — and how you can join the community.
