Joomla 6.0 released
On Tuesday, October 14, 2025, after two years of teamwork, testing and code sprints, the Joomla! Project released Joomla 6.0 together with Joomla 5.4. This new version brings fresh features, better performance, and stronger security made by volunteers for everyone: from personal bloggers to big companies.
What’s new in Joomla 6.0?
- Automatic core updates
Keeping your site safe is now easier. Joomla 6 introduces automatic updates, so your site can stay secure and up to date without manual work. - Cassiopeia child template
More design freedom! You can now change colors and fonts directly from the backend, so no need for custom CSS. - Better content versioning
Now, versioning also saves custom fields, not just text. This helps when you need to restore older versions of your content. - Two new custom fields
- Notes field: Add helper text or tips between fields in articles.
- Numbers field: Show numbers with optional currency formatting.
- Smoother upgrades with backward compatibility
The new Backward Compatibility 6 plugin helps ensure that extensions and templates work smoothly when upgrading from Joomla 5 to 6. - Improved user experience
Both Cassiopeia (frontend) and Atum (backend) templates now include CSS transitions, giving your site a smoother look and feel.
New Joomla 6 features for developers
- New Date and Datetime fields.
- TinyMCE 8.0.1 with more accessibility and bug fixes.
- Cached language files for faster loading.
A full list of changes can be found in the 6.0.0 milestone on GitHub.
Upgrading made simple
If you’re already using Joomla 5.4, upgrading to Joomla 6.0 is an upgrade, not a migration, usually quick, safe, and straightforward. Most extensions will continue to work thanks to the compatibility plugin.
However, it’s still important to plan and test the process carefully. We recommend testing the upgrade on a local or staging server first, before applying it to your live website. This ensures everything runs smoothly and avoids unwanted downtime.
